The S&W 442 or 642 looks great and the price seems right. We can find them used from $350 and brand new from $450. I'm trying to find more information about any issues with these models and personal reviews from 642 or 442 owners. I don't know how long it was in production as a -4. They came in 2 and 4 inch barrels. Measure from the muzzle end to the face of the cylinder. The 856 is just an assembly number.

Because the Model 41 comes from the factory with a light recoil spring that's designed to operate the gun on Standard Velocity ammunition.
Having extra recoil springs on-hand isn't a bad idea if you plan on doing a lot of shooting. And then here’s the three side by side to show the length comparison. The 13 round magazine adds 5/8” of an inch to the grip (which gives me a full grip but barely making the cut) while the 15 round magazine adds a full 1 inch to the length with plenty of room for a full grip. It just feels much much better and I will definitely use for my edc.

I'm going to give it a full polish, as I did with my S&W 460V (3lb/12oz of chrome-like stainless beauty with a custom-made Kansas Black Walnut grip). The grip on the 686 is black plastic with a rubber covering, and frankly - it leaves a lot to be desired. It seems the belief is that the mag springs are weak and compress to the point of failure. I agree so I ordered springer precision srings that specifically for the 2.0 10mm. Cant wait for them to arrive. i. (2) The recoil spring has orange paint on tip and dont forget its the 4 inch model. I cannot find that spring's weight.
