The first chapter of Jack London's White Fang was the best short story I've ever read. Most of Bukowski's short stories are great. The Wall, Jean Paul Sartre. A brilliant exposition of the thoughts racing through a man's head as he waits to be executed. The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury.The best ever is Gormenghast by Mervyn Peake, then Book of the New Sun by Wolfe. The Witcher books are also literally medieval, and Joe Abercrombie's new series is fantastic as well. The Once and Future King is great. It's about King Arthur, Merlin, and the Knights of the Round Table! The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings.Like my favorite book when I was in high school was the road by cormac McCarthy. Grim tale about the nature of humans after everything collapses. Shows some of the extremes we could go to. It’s still on my list of great books. Now I’ve read more one of my favorite books is a classic by Alexandre Dumas, The count of monte Cristo.The Count of Monte Cristo is hands down, one of my all time favorite books, classic or otherwise. I mean talk about a slow burn with a killer payoff at the end. The book is almost a trail of patience; righteous vengeance in the hands of fate personified, played out over 400+ pages. You may have a hard time putting it down. A coworker once asked me if I had any books to recommend. I asked him we he would ask me, of all the people, such a question. Apparently years ago I recommended him two books and he liked them so now I‘m the authority on good books. Book thief was one of the books. 10/10 would recommend again

A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson. Bill Bryson's works are fantastic. He makes rather cumbersome history more accessible just by relating things to everyday life. This is a brilliant book - it points out how complex and amazing science is, and yet how much we don't really know.
